The Atlantic roared as I walked the shore, its crashing waves relentlessly reshaping the Outer Banks, North Carolina, as they have for millennia. When on the coastline a House on the Beach emerged into view. Its idyllic charm was undeniable, yet it struck me as an absurd folly; perched mere yards from the advancing tide, an ever-growing army of water. The scene looked like a defiant standoff between man and nature, a battle where only one the outcome seemed certain, timing the only question. In that paradox of the moment I found a composition in my viewfinder.
