Standing on Whitstable’s High Street, with camera in hand, I fished for a moment of inspiration. But this was Lockdown, empty streets, closed shopfronts, and silence where life once thrived. Yet, amidst the depressed mood, I found a small act of resilience and ingenuity had emerged. A shopkeeper, undeterred by the “new rules”, had hauled her counter to the wide-open doors of her store, standing resolutely before the barren street, waiting for a customer. In the distance a man approaches, and as he neared the shopkeeper’s posture shifted, a glimmer of hope in her eyes. Could this be her moment? Could this lone figure be her first customer of the day? But as the man drew closer, his gaze met the camera, and he flashed me an exaggerated happy grin; an ironic acknowledgment to the surreal nature of the scene. Without missing a step he continued his walk.
