In the crisp, invigorating air of a January day, the low, bright sunlight spills across the seafront of Broadstairs, Kent. Time seems to pause in that rare, perfect moment, when the world hangs in quiet suspension. This is when I caught sight of two boys; side by side and standing transfixed, their eyes fixed on the endless horizon where the heavy sea swells and recedes, as if the very ocean breathes in harmony with their awe. The water wrapped itself around the slipway, encircling them, as if drawing them into its rhythm. Their dog stands apart, its posture alert and rigid, a stark contrast to the boys' relaxed, spellbound gaze. What is it watching, alone on its patch of tarmac, distanced from the pull of the sea? Perhaps a signal, a subtle shift in the air, something beyond the photograph to feed our imagination.
