IMMERSION

In Cromer, Norfolk, I strolled along the seafront toward the pier and the Pavilion Theatre on a sunny June day. Despite the warmth, the waters of the North Sea remained cold. A man caught my attention, bare-chested and wading knee-deep into the sea; rather him than me, I thought. Peering over the sea wall, I noticed his wife nearby, settled into a deckchair, relaxed in the sun and absorbed in her smartphone. The contrast between them was striking. While he was attuned to the conditions around him, she appeared warmly detached, comfortably enclosed within her digital space. The photograph brings these two states together, two people sharing the same place while experiencing it in very different ways
