SHADOWS OVER SHONES
by Mike Rossi
2012
This panoramic black & white series presents a considered selection from Mike Rossi’s Shadows Over Stones, a long photographic pursuit of the koppies and freestanding stone forms that mark the landscapes of Southern Africa.
Originally captured on black & white film using a Hasselblad XPan camera, the photographs carry a distinctive horizontal
language shaped by the tonal depth, grain and atmospheric subtlety unique to film. Within this monochrome register,
attention settles on geology, weather and atmosphere, where shadow, storm and light briefly align
across ancient formations shaped by time, memory and erosion.
Released by OPENPAGE STUDIO as a legacy collection, each photograph is offered as a limited edition of 20,
individually numbered and accompanied by a certificate of authenticity issued by the studio.
These photographs form a selected black & white editioned series from Shadows Over Stones, drawn from Mike Rossi’s
wider original body of work and released by OPENPAGE STUDIO as part of his legacy collection.
Across geology, atmosphere and the shifting moods of Nimbus, the photographs hold moments in which stone,
weather and memory briefly converge. Encountered as a complete sequence, this considered selection becomes
a meditation on endurance, loss and the disappearing forms of the Southern African landscape.
