A familiar high street, the kind found in countless English towns, unfolds with quiet regularity. Here, however, a painted figure of Queen Elizabeth II and her corgis looks out from a wall, presiding over the street below, a gentle emblem of the nation’s affection for its dogs. I fixed the camera in place with a stop-down filter to control the unforgiving midday sun. The pace was slow, hours passing as people and their companions came and went without aligning. Moments suggested themselves, then slipped away again. Eventually, after long patience, the scene settled. People and dogs moved into place beneath their watchful observer, and the photograph arrived, earned through anticipation rather than chance.
