ALARM

On a summer bank holiday, the beach at Whitstable, Kent, is filled with families enjoying the ease of the day. Then, without warning, the sharp cry of an emergency alarm cuts through the sunlight. Its sound pulls attention in a single direction, bodies turning instinctively toward the lifeboat station. At that precise moment, I release the shutter, holding a brief convergence of reactions, curiosity, concern, pause. The scene balances between two states, one of leisure, the other of the urgency of life. Within minutes the alarm falls silent again. Nothing more unfolds. The beach settles, conversations resume, and the day continues as if uninterrupted.
