Two-volume photographic work

MOMENTS is a long-form photographic work developed through two distinct but related bodies of images.
Realised through the volumes in black & white and in colour & light, the work extends across photographic prints, artist books and installation.
The works do not mirror one another, nor do they present the same images in different treatments. Each volume brings together a different selection of photographs, shaped by its own visual logic.
What connects them is intent. Both volumes are shaped by restraint and a desire to slow the act of looking. Together, they form a considered whole; two works in dialogue, held within one project.

What is inherited, and what is carried forward?
Developed over four years within the informal settlements of South Africa, INHERITANCE observes environments shaped through economic separation, migration and survival. The work focuses not on spectacle, but on the quieter presence of everyday life as it unfolds within domestic and communal spaces.
Rather than seeking dramatic narrative, the photographs attend closely to gesture, atmosphere and human presence. Personality and circumstance emerge through small details, fragments of interior space and the relationships between people and their surroundings.
Produced as a long-form collaborative project, the work combines Mike Rossi’s photographic observations with a carefully structured visual edit developed by Chris Page.
Photographic exhibition currently presented at the Old Railway Buildings, Grabouw, South Africa.

AUTUMN LEAVES

Developed through a sustained observation of fallen leaves and seasonal change, AUTUMN LEAVES explores fragile natural forms isolated against dark space.
Photographed individually and in small groupings, the leaves are approached less as botanical specimens and more as transient sculptural forms. Surface texture, colour variation and gesture become central to the work, revealing traces of time, weather and gradual decay.
The project moves between documentation and abstraction. Detached from their original environment, the leaves begin to resemble figures, fragments or suspended movements, allowing interpretation to shift between natural observation and imagined presence.
Produced as an ongoing collaborative edit between Mike Rossi and Chris Page, selected works from the series have been exhibited within the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens, Cape Town, South Africa.
SHADOWS OVER STONES

Developed over a number of years across remote regions of South Africa, SHADOWS OVER STONES explores the relationship between land, weather and geological time.
Working primarily with a Hasselblad XPan panoramic camera and black & white negative film, Mike Rossi photographed rock formations, open plains and shifting skies through extended periods of observation and return. The work moves between detail and scale, tracing the quiet tension between permanence and change within the landscape.
Rather than presenting landscape as spectacle, the photographs attend closely to atmosphere, surface and spatial presence. Light, shadow and weather become active elements within the composition, shaping each scene through movement and duration.
The series was later exhibited in 2012 at the Nedbank Clock Tower Building, Cape Town, and continues to form part of ongoing photographic presentations within South Africa.
THE THAMES
A long-form photographic project

2025 - continuing
Developed as an ongoing photographic journey from source to sea, THE THAMES explores the river as both physical landscape and historical presence. Moving gradually across its length, the work observes the shifting relationship between industry, architecture, weather, memory and daily life.
Rather than documenting the river as a continuous survey, the photographs emerge through periods of return and sustained observation. Urban wharfs, tidal edges, abandoned structures, open marshland and quieter transitional spaces are approached as fragments within a larger evolving narrative.
Black & white and colour photographs are used independently, each responding differently to atmosphere, light and structure. The work moves between description and interpretation, balancing documentary observation with a more reflective photographic language.
As the project develops, the river becomes less a fixed geographical route and more a visual thread connecting histories, movements and changing human presence along its banks.

CREATURES OF THE WOOD

Developed through close observation of timber surfaces, grain patterns and natural weathering, CREATURES OF THE WOOD explores the suggestion of imagined forms emerging from within the material itself. Knots, fractures, textures and shifting colour begin to resemble faces, figures and fleeting animal presences discovered within the wood.
Photographed in isolation against simplified backgrounds, the works move between abstraction and recognition. Surface detail becomes central to the image, encouraging a slower act of looking in which perception shifts continuously between object and illusion.
Produced as a collaborative photographic edit between Mike Rossi and Chris Page, the project forms part of an ongoing exploration into observation, transformation and the quieter ambiguities found within natural form.
THE LIGHTHOUSE
A long-form photographic project

Developed through repeated encounters with coastal locations across Britain, and elsewhere, LIGHTHOUSES explores these structures as places of isolation, endurance and human presence within the landscape. Standing between land, sea and weather, the lighthouses become both physical landmarks and quieter psychological spaces shaped by atmosphere, distance and changing light.
Some photographs emerge through carefully planned journeys involving tides, weather conditions, remote access routes and extended periods of waiting. Others occur unexpectedly, discovered by chance while travelling or working within unfamiliar coastal environments. Together, the project moves between deliberate pursuit and spontaneous encounter.
Rather than approaching the lighthouses as purely documentary subjects, the project observes their relationship with solitude, navigation, memory and the enduring elemental character of the coastline itself. As the series continues to expand, LIGHTHOUSES forms an ongoing photographic exploration of coastal space, atmosphere and the remarkable presence these structures maintain within the landscape.
GHOSTS OF SEBURBIA

Developed as a collaborative photographic project, GHOSTS OF SUBURBIA explores the suggestion of unseen presence within familiar domestic spaces.
Using layered movement and carefully constructed interior scenes, the photographs blur the boundary between memory, imagination and lived environment. Figures appear only partially formed, momentarily occupying ordinary suburban settings before dissolving again into light and atmosphere.
Rather than presenting literal narratives, the series invites a quieter sense of ambiguity, drawing upon enduring cultural ideas surrounding spirits, absence and the traces people leave behind within the spaces they inhabit.
