REMAINS

The structures left behind, once built with purpose and force, now feel diminished. Abandoned, they sit quietly as the land begins its slow work of reclaiming what was taken. Wandering among the remains of the Cornish mines, my attention shifted from the architecture itself to other traces of human presence. Marks left behind, gestures repeated across time. From ancient handprints pressed into cave walls to the spray-painted tags of modern streets, the same instinct persists, the simple declaration, “I was here”. In this way, the photograph becomes an imprint of a layered legacy, an act of attempted immortality, however temporary, a human desire to hold time still within a single moment. Seen this way, the image is not only a record of what remains, but of the need to be remembered, etched quietly into the surface of the world.
