Two photographic volumes realised as artist books and limited editions
THE THAMES
a long-form photographic project
by Chris Page
This project began with a simple idea: to follow the River Thames from source to sea. It did not take long to realise something.
I was not really photographing a river.
Each visit adds another small piece to the story. Sometimes I arrive with a photograph already in mind; more often I simply wait to see what the river has to offer. The work has become less about documenting the Thames and more about understanding the places,
structures and communities that exist because of it.
I make no attempt to produce a continuous survey. Instead, the photographs emerge through repeated visits and patient observation.
Familiar places are revisited, unexpected moments are allowed to unfold, and quieter subjects are given the same attention
as the landmarks for which the river is better known.
Black & white and colour are used independently, each responding to the character of a place rather than following a predetermined rule.
Some photographs describe, while others suggest. Together, they build a broader portrait of a river that is constantly changing
while somehow always remaining itself.
As the project continues, I find myself thinking less about travelling the Thames and more about listening to it. The river becomes a thread
connecting industry and nature, history and memory, quiet moments and extraordinary events. Even when the river is not in sight,
what I have photographed exists because of the river.
There is no timescale for this project and no predetermined end date. I will continue to return whenever the opportunity arises
and wherever curiosity leads me. The journey may pause, change direction or take many years,
but the Thames will still be there.
