Two photographic volumes realised as artist books and limited editions
THE LIGHTHOUSE
a long-form photographic project
by Chris Page
This project did not begin with a plan. It evolved gradually over many years until I realised that what I had considered to be individual photographs had, without intention, become the beginnings of a long-form project.
Each visit adds another small piece to the story. Sometimes I travel specifically to photograph a lighthouse; more often I simply follow
the coastline, allowing it to reveal what it has to offer. The work has become less about documenting individual structures
and more about understanding the landscapes, weather and atmosphere that give them their enduring presence.
I make no attempt to produce a comprehensive survey. Instead, the photographs emerge through repeated visits, careful planning and
patient observation. Some require favourable tides, changing weather or long periods of waiting. Others reveal themselves
unexpectedly. Familiar places are revisited, new coastlines explored, and each encounter adds another
layer to an evolving body of work.
Black & white and colour are used independently, each responding to the character of a place rather than following a predetermined
approach. Some photographs describe, while others suggest. Together they build a broader portrait of these remarkable
structures and the landscapes that have grown around them.
There is no timescale for this project and no predetermined end date. I will continue to return whenever opportunity and curiosity lead me.
New lighthouses will undoubtedly be photographed, familiar ones revisited, but the project has become less about photographing
another lighthouse and more about exploring the remarkable places they inhabit.
