Standing on Staffa and looking across to the Isle of Mull, I was struck by an unusual clarity, a rare condition in Scotland. Elsewhere, the theatrics of weather, light, and colour were unfolding, but here everything seemed to have settled.

Washed in strong sunlight, the layers of the landscape began to merge. Sea, mountain, and sky softened into a restrained palette. Texture remained, but nothing dominated or demanded attention. Structure was present, no longer reliant on deep shadow or heavy contrast.

I knew at the time that what I recorded in-camera wouldn’t fully contain how the moment felt. The interpretation came later, not to construct fiction, but to bring the image closer to how I had seen it beyond my eyes. What remains is perhaps a stylised memory, offered quietly for others to experience in their own way.
