DIVER

Night photography has always drawn me in. It is a place of illusion, where what is hidden during the day begins to surface, and familiar colours are reshaped into something less certain. Vision becomes less reliant on sight alone, as other senses heighten while darkness takes hold.

 

At a bend in the road beneath a railway bridge, I had an image in mind long before it existed. It lived only as a possibility. A Deep Sea Diver painted on the wall watched over me, while a steady flow of traffic passed from over my shoulder. I settled into place, allowing the scene to reveal what it might become.

 

Time passed. Frames were made and reviewed, but none quite held. Then a double-decker bus swept through the scene, leaving behind a streak of clean white light that shifted everything. It wasn’t right, not yet, but it hinted at what might be possible.

 

So I stayed.

 

An hour later, another bus appeared. This time I was ready for the moment. The shutter closed, and the image stepped out of the night.
