LOWDOWN

Staying for a few days in a beach house on the Outer Banks of North Carolina gave me the chance to live with the dunes from dawn to dusk. It became a time not only for photography, but for learning — watching how light moves and how it quietly reshapes the colours we think we know.

In the early morning, the sun rises in the east over the sea, leaving the dunes held in deep shadow, slow to release the grip of night. Gradually, warmer tones begin to surface. Golden light pushes through the darkness, creating strong contrasts as it rolls across the undulating sand.

By midday, the sun stands high and the landscape flattens. Shadows withdraw, colours pale, and the dunes seem to rest — their forms softened, their edges subdued.

As the sun drifts westward and lowers again, the dunes begin to respond. This is my favourite time to be with them. Subtle, delicate colours reappear — sometimes clearly seen, more often just sensed. A low, sweeping light moves across the surface, briefly restoring drama before it slips away once more.
