PASTORAL

I arrived on the Romney Marshes while it was still dark. I knew the place, the time I wanted to be there, and the rough shape of the composition I had in mind. What I didn’t know was how the land would reveal itself once daylight arrived. That uncertainty is part of the draw — experience helps, but so does trust, and a willingness to accept that nothing may come of it.

With the camera fixed firmly on a tripod, there is little to do but wait.

I waited for that narrow moment between night and day, when colour begins to surface from the darkness, before the light of a new morning fully takes hold. It’s a brief, fragile interval, easily missed.

When the shutter finally closes, the moment is held. What remains is not a record of what was there, but the possibility of shaping what was felt when the light first appeared.
