WISTMAN'S
Wistman’s Wood had long been a destination for me. Its ancient reputation had travelled well ahead of it, shaping expectations long before I arrived. Standing at its edge for the first time, however, the welcome felt uncertain, as though the wood itself were holding me at a distance.
With the sky restricted and what lay beyond out of sight, the woods felt less like a place to enter and more like a property, one whose inhabitants wished to remain private.
Granite boulders covered the ground, leaving only narrow pockets where mosses and lichens could take hold. Dead man’s beard hung from twisted branches, heavy with moisture, feeding an atmosphere that seemed to generate itself. The trees turned in on one another, contorted and dense, forming a dark, tangled canopy where light was scarce and colour restrained.
Within that visual confusion, composition refused to settle. The scene would not resolve into a single view. I stopped, sat, and allowed my attention to slow, focusing on fragments rather than the whole. It became clear that this was not a place to be gathered at once.
Under the quiet authority of the wood, I adjusted my approach, responding to what it allowed rather than insisting on what I had imagined. I resisted the urge to intervene further. Some moments only reveal themselves when left to breathe on their own terms.
