KGOPOLWE "Place of Memories"

It is said that the forefathers of the baPhalaborwa came south from Bokhalaka, in present-day Zimbabwe, under the leadership of Chief Malatshi. Driven by conflict and in search of iron ore, they eventually reached the fertile lands west of present-day Kruger Park. Rich in wildlife and metal deposits, this region became known as Phalaborwa, meaning better than the south.

After settling near Kgopolwe, the baPhalaborwa established important metalworking communities around nearby koppies such as Sealene and Loole Kop, smelting iron to produce hoes, axes, spearheads and arrowheads. Today Loole Kop no longer exists, having been completely excavated, a stark reminder of how many of these historical landscapes have been lost to commercial extraction.

Both Kgopolwe and Sealene are now protected as national historical monuments. Kgopolwe itself served as the burial ground of several indunas, the headmen of successive chiefs, giving rise to its deeply resonant name, The Place of Memories. Archaeological evidence confirms centuries of occupation here, with multiple phases of metalworking activity linked to wider trade routes along the East Coast of Africa.

On the day I stood below Kgopolwe, surrounded by mopane trees, Nimbus had already descended with a warm wind. Butterfly-shaped leaves drifted slowly through the darkening air. When the sun briefly broke through the cloud, shadows moved across the forest floor like candlelight. In that flickering atmosphere the koppie seemed to come alive with the presence of those long gone, preserved here in memory, unlike the vanished beauty of nearby Loole Kop.
